Now a table too

My first piece of furniture to be moved into my new room was a sofa from the university, then a colleague helped me move my new hoogslaper there in pieces. Today I got yet another piece of furniture, this time from my supervisor: a lovely wodden table. We will move it to my room on Wednesday... unless in this heat it decides to take the walk on its own...

Aquarium to come

If I did not mention it before, I better do it now: I have a really nice job with some great colleagues and a fun and cosy work environment. Now, in our new building (remember, the old building was left with great style!) we will further increase the cosiness by buying both a footballgame, a draft beer system, comics for the relaxing corner, and now ... an Aquarium!
I together with one or two others will be responsible for purchase, installation and maintenance. This is my chance of taking care of an aquarium again, which I have missed a lot ever since I sold my old aquarium.

Weekend activities

There is always somewhere nice to go salsa dancing in the weekend. During the week, I stick to the places in Nijmegen: Amanné (Friday and Sunday) and Salsa Tipica (Monday). On Fridays and Saturdays there is a good chance of finding a nice party in one of the bigger cities by checking out the uitgaansagenda on Salsa.nl

Next Saturday for instance, there is a great show and party in den Haag arranged by Salsaventura, celebrating their 10 year anniversary!

Women in Science

I was quite surprised to learn that Holland is the country in Europe with the least women in science, only 17% in university and industry positions combined. On an everyday basis I see lots of women around, but apparently the women never get the high positions, but drop out of their science career after their PhD studies to use time on their family instead. The country with most women in science is Latvia, with an amazing 53%, while the EU as a whole has only 29% female researchers.

Baking Fiends

Great work Dave!
Dave managed the impressive feat of baking Charlotte and Vendetta cookies complete with coloured icing and quotes. If you read the comments to his Cookie Gallery you will notice that there are still people out there who think fiends are just misspelled friends... :o)

Fun at work!

Today was the last day in our old grey concrete university building before the move. None of us had in mind to leave without a trace, and since the building is to be torn down anyway, we might as well leave our trace decoratively on the walls! :oD

Indian Summer

The cold and wet weather through August made us all fear the coming cold and humid winter, but then the weather surprised us once again, this time by delivering a perfect indian summer. High blue skies, puffy fluffy white clouds, grass growing faster than we can mow the lawn and wonderful pictures of the weather on all my favourite picture sites.

Rapunzel

I really need a haircut. If you have met me within the last year or so, you already know what I am talking about. But it is not only that my hair has grown incredibly long in only four years time, it is also a ceremonial thing. I promised myself to have a haircut as soon as I finished my university degree, but now I get loads of compliments for my natural curly take-it-with-me-everywhere dead-weight. Cut it off!

Paint the roses

Today I saw a man crouching to paint his fence, but from my angle it looked as if he was painting something on his bushes. I wonder if anyone have ever painted their roses for anyone.

Looking for...

I have a weakness for Camper shoes. Unfortunately my favourite Camper Twins from this years collection is already sold out, so I decided to put an advert on my webpage for them. The idea developed a bit, and now it is a general Lost or Missing page. Please visit.

England prevails

I have been in England a lot lately. I am not only talking about my trip to Cambridge last week, but my voyage into the cold dark future vision of London from 1983, where the surveillance and control of the scared public in the post-nuclear-war society is performed by a single cold man and his computer.

The graphic novel was adapted to the silver screen in 2005.
